When selecting a ASTM A213 316 Stainless Steel Tubing or A213 TP 316 condenser tubing for an application, a number of considerations have to be made. The SS Tubing grade needs to have sufficient corrosion resistance combined with suitable mechanical and physical properties. Tubular products are available for most stainless steel grades and are used in a wide range of applications and industrial segments; standard austenitics and austenitics for high temperature applications (e.g. 1.4307 (304L), 1.4541 (321), 1.4845 (310S) and 1.4948 (304H)), standard austenitics with molybdenum for improved corrosion resistance (e.g. 1.4404 (316L), 1.4571 (316Ti) and 1.4438 (317L)), superaustenitics (e.g. 1.4539 (904L) and 1.4547 (254 SMO®)), duplex (e.g. 1.4462 (2205), 1.4362 (2304) and 1.4162 (LDX 2101®)) and superduplex (e.g. 1.4410 (2507)).
The need for ASTM A213 316 Stainless Steel Tubing increases in more corrosive, low maintenance and high risk (failure) applications. Within offshore, welded tubes are used below the sea level in flowlines, umbilicals and riser pipes.
A213 TP 316 Seamless tubing can also have defects in the base metal that result from the manufacturing process. These include laps, scratches, tears or laminations. Seamless tubing should consequently also be inspected similar to welded tubing as part of the quality control process. Typically seamless tubing is inspected using HT and ultrasonic testing (UT).

What is ASTM A213 316 Stainless Steel Tubing?
Grades 1.4401 and 1.4404, commonly known as stainless steel grades 316 and 316L, are the second most commonly used stainless steel grade after 304/304L. 316 is basically an improved version of 304, with addition of molybdenum and slightly higher content of nickel.
The ASTM A213 316 Stainless Steel Tubing covers a specific range of sizes laid down by ANSI specifications. Any sizes not covered by these specifications are tube. ASTM A213 316 Stainless Steel Tubing dimensions determined by ASME B36.19 covering the outside diameter and the Schedule wall thickness. Note that stainless wall thicknesses to ANSI B36.19 all have an ‘S’ suffix. Sizes without an ‘S’ suffix are to ANSI B36.10 which is intended for carbon steel pipes.

ASTM A312 TP 316 Pipe/ Tube :
Seamless and straight-seam welded austenitic pipe intended for high temperature and general corrosive service. Filler metal not permitted during welding.
ASTM A358 TP 316 Pipe/ Tube:
Electric fusion welded austenitic pipe for corrosive and/or high temperature service. Typically only pipe up to 8 inch is produced to this specification. Addition of filler metal is permitted during welding. The main grades are ASTM A358 class 1, ASTM A358 gr 316, ASTM A358 grade 316, ASTM A358 CL1 EFW welded pipe
ASTM A790 TP 316 Pipe/ Tube:
Seamless and straight-seam welded ferritic/austenitic (duplex) pipe intended for general corrosive service, with a particular emphasis on resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Duplex Steel UNS S31803 Pipe, Duplex Steel UNS S31803 Tube, Duplex Steel UNS S3220 & Super Duplex Steel UNS S32750 Pipe are the most widely used grade in the duplex family of stainless steels
